Rock crystal (family of silica) is a variety of quartz, colorless and completely transparent crystals, shaped as a hexagonal prism topped with a pyramid.

History
The term "crystal" is a form of the Greek word "kristallos," which means "ice." Because of its resemblance, crystal began to be called transparent quartz, which in ancient times was thought to be strongly hardened ice. Up until the second quarter of the 19th century, crystal and crystal were synonymous and were in common use. Only later, crystals were called the natural polyhedrons of minerals, while crystal with the additional "mountainous" referred to quartz. Crystal is simply a heavy, highly refractive glass with lead.

Glass and rock crystal balls of the same size and appearance feel differently by hand. Glass gets warm quickly, while rock crystal stays cold. In ancient Rome, the wealthy patricians used large crystal balls to cool their hands in the heat. It turned out that rock crystal, unlike glass, easily conducts heat. It sort of takes heat away from the body and absorbs it with its entire mass. And the glass heats quickly from the surface, although it may remain cold inside.

For thousands of years, from rock crystal carved seals, vessels, cups, jewelry, ritual and magic items. Now rock crystal is used in radio engineering, optics and jewelry.

 Analogues of rock crystal

Most often, imitations of natural crystals are made from glass. Crackle quartz (snow/leddy/sugar quartz) with a cracked interior is the Chinese analog of rock crystal, a heat-treated glass. Colorless samples of the mineral fluorite can be confused with rock crystal, but the former is very fragile. The artificial material is made by adding lead and barium oxide to ordinary glass and selling chandeliers and goblets made of it.

How to distinguish a rock crystal from a fake?

All quartz crystals, including rock crystal, are characterized by high hardness. In terms of hardness, the stone is quite different from glass (5 points). Therefore, all fakes of rock crystal made of glass are easy to identify - they are all prone to scratches, and quickly become hot in the hands. A natural variety of quartz has a lower thermal conductivity.

How else can you spot a fake? It is enough to look at the stone with the naked eye. Real rock crystal almost always contains inclusions of all kinds, unlike glass. The edges of the cut natural stone are clear.

Rock crystal: the magical properties and astrological compatibility

Rock crystal can be right- and left-handed, because in the process of growth the crystals spiral, and some of the small edges are present on either the left or right side. The Japanese believe that only left-handed crystals can bring good luck and longevity to their owner, while the right-handed ones can take it all away.

Rock crystal is the stone of magicians, psychics and clairvoyants. It is said to be a universal stone that combines well with other minerals, enhancing their properties and energy.

Astromineralogy does not give a definite answer to which of the zodiac signs suitable rock crystal in its properties. It is considered a universal stone.
